ABOUT RPH

Royal Perth Hospital has a long and distinguished history of great service and dedication to the West Australian public.

It was the first hospital established in Western Australia, and is the State’s largest teaching hospital.

The hospital opened on July 14 1855 and was named the Colonial Hospital, before it was renamed Perth Public Hospital, Perth Hospital and, in 1946, Royal Perth Hospital.

RPH is one of Australia’s largest hospitals, with the second largest trauma workload in the country and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australasia.

It has a distinguished international record in patient care, teaching and research, hosting Nobel Prize-winning research and world-leading experts in areas such as stroke, burns care and HIV research.

RPH employs about 7000 staff members, which includes world and national leaders in several areas, as well as more than 500 volunteers in the "Friends of RPH" service.

The hospital treats about 73,000 in-patients a year, receives about 225,000 outpatient attendances a year, and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australia, with more than 55,000 presentations a year.
